AHMEDABAD: In past fortnight alone ending on March 12, Covid-19 cases have spiked by 83% in Gujarat. In a matter of four weeks, the weekly cases rose from 1,845 to 4,382, recording 2.4 times rise in the cases in the third major rise being recorded in the state.

The spike was especially severe in two districts – Ahmedabad and Surat. While Surat recorded 136% rise from 764 to 1,806 in 15 days, for Ahmedabad the rise was 101% or doubling the figure from 900 to 1,816. It is important to note that Gujarat is among the six states of India accounting for 86% of the daily Covid-19 positive cases.

In absolute terms, the eight districts namely Ahmedabad, Surat, Vadodara, Rajkot, Bhavnagar, Jamnagar, Junagadh and Gandhinagar recorded 87% jump in cases from 3,507 to 6,564. In comparison, the rest of Gujarat recorded a 65% rise – from 899 to 1,487.

The spike – primarily seen coinciding with the slew of civic and local governance body elections and bigticket events such as Cricket matches and wedding season – finally worried the state government with an emergency core committee meeting convened by the CM on Friday evening with senior IAS officers and health department officials.

Dr Dileep Mavalankar, director of IIPH Gandhinagar (IIPH-G), said that the spike is witnessed in several parts of the country currently. “The urban areas are the focal point of the pandemic due to factors such as congestion and higher degree of movement. Factors such as higher number of tests are also responsible. But if we look at the data closely, the non-urban areas are also witnessing a rise,” he said.
