Ahmedabad: About half the working population in western city areas is engaged in salaried work, indicated analysis of the students of Faculty of Planning at the Cept University. The students, part of City Studio, have displayed their work at the ongoing Cept Winter Exhibition. The study, analysis of more than 50 blocks of 1 sq km each in the city, indicated that eastern city areas have a higher share of self-employment.

The study also indicated that the share of public transportation usage among the salaried persons was very low. About 81% of salaried persons — 85% men and 77% women — used private transport including their own vehicles and modes such as cabs and autos to reach their workplace. The average commute time for the salaried persons was 23 minutes.

Another study of the City Studio indicated higher per capita monthly income for western areas — Ashram Road had the highest income at Rs 96,000, followed by Rs 64,000 in Prahladnagar, Rs 45,000 in South Bopal, and Rs 44,000 for Naranpura and Maninagar among others. The tutors mentioned that the data is indicative. “The sample size for the study was 2,800 household, and the values shown are based on individual responses. There is surely a margin of error, but it can indicate the broader trends,” said a Studio tutor.

If the western city areas scored on per capita income, the concentration of self-employed persons was higher in eastern areas. For example, Maninagar had 56% and Saraspur 52% of the respondents identified themselves as self-employed against 38% and 39% salaried persons.

“Employment plays an important role in overall living fabric of the city. For example, we checked livelihood, desirability and affordability to see where the citizens prefer to live, and found that proximity to job is a major factor. Other factors include proximity to institution, living space requirements, infrastructural factors, social factors and proximity to amenities among others,” said a tutor.
