AHMEDABAD: The IIMAvericks fellowship, offered by the CIIE.CO at IIM Ahmedabad (IIM-A), got only one candidate out of the batch of 380-odd students of the flagship PGP course in 2021 recruitment. The number was 11 six years ago in 2015.

The IIM-A released a consolidated final placement report for 2021 on Monday where the premier B-school said that 131 firms participated, the second highest in the past six years. They pointed at a good placement record and cited overall unfavourable market conditions as possible factors for a bigger number of students shying away from taking the entrepreneurship route.

Shashi Gupta, AVP (regional incubation) at CIIE.CO and coordinator for the IIMAverics initiative, told TOI that there is no data substantiating that it could be Covid-19 pandemic or security of a job. “We see it this way – the startup ecosystem has matured in the past few years and several students wishing to be entrepreneurs want to validate their start-up ideas before committing full time to it,” he said.

He added that this year five students had applied for the fellowship but only two were selected. One of them eventually took up the fellowship that supports the students for a year with Rs 40,000 monthly stipend for two years along with mentorship support.
