AHMEDABAD: Gujarat in past 12 hours recorded two deaths due to Covid-19 infection – one each in Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar and added 46 new positive cases.
State health department officials said that death toll due to Covid-19 in Gujarat is 19 whereas total positive cases are 308.
The officials confirmed that a doctor from Vadaj in Ahmedabad, part of the health survey team for Covid-19, has tested positive on Friday morning, making it the first confirmed case of a doctor contacting Covid-19 in Gujarat.
Jayanti Ravi, principal secretary (health & family welfare), said that since Thursday evening, Gujarat has recorded 46 new positive cases including 11 from Ahmedabad, 7 from Vadodara, 5 from Rajkot, 4 each from Bhavnagar and Bharuch, 2 each from Kutch and Patan and 1 from Gandhinagar.
“We again want to tell the people of Gujarat that it’s not an alarming trend and it’s (the rise in number of positive cases) a direct result of intensive testing method we have adopted for past few days,” said Ravi. “It’s on expected lines and thus it’s no reason for panic. We are taking proactive steps with cluster level management.”
It’s notable that on Thursday Gujarat recorded the steepest rise with 76 new cases registered in a matter of 24 hours. The figure included 58 cases from Ahmedabad city alone. Cumulatively, since evening of April 7, the state’s tally has increased by 5 deaths and 131 positive cases in a matter of less than 72 hours.
With the new case, now the district-wise positive cases tally includes 153 from Ahmedabad, 39 from Vadodara, 24 from Surat, 22 from Bhavnagar, 18 from Rajkot, 14 from Gandhinagar and Patan each, 4 from Kutch and Bharuch each, 3 from Porbandar, 2 from Mehsana, Gir-Somnath, Chhota Udepur and Anand each, 1 from Panchmahal, Jamnagar, Morbi, Sabarkantha and Dahod.
With addition of Bharuch on Friday, nine of the districts of Gujarat have recorded their first Covid-19 positive cases since April 1.
Likewise, Ahmedabad now accounts for seven deaths due to Covid-19 infection, Surat four, Vadodara and Bhavnagar two each, Gandhinagar, Panchmahal, Patan and Jamnagar one each.
“In Ahmedabad, the new cases are coming from the identified clusters such as Kalupur, Shah-e-Alam and Bapunagar whereas new cases have also been recorded from Juhapura, Nava Vadaj and Dudheshwar. In Vadaj, a doctor, who was part of the health survey, has also tested positive today,” said Ravi. “We are gathering more details. All teams are equipped with personal protection kits (PPE). We are yet to identify the source of infection.”
As on Friday morning, Gujarat has processed 6,738 samples out of which 308 are positive and 6,154 are negative. Result for 276 is pending. In past 24 hours, the state carried out 978 tests, said health department officials.
The principal secretary said that giving samples is not an option. “A few cases have come to our notice where the persons have refused to cooperate with the health department officials. Such behaviour would not be tolerated. Action would be initiated under provisions of the Epidemic Diseases Act as the person is not only putting self in danger but also those around,” she said. “If needed, police teams would accompany the health teams for purpose of health check-up and sample collection.”
Ravi said that investigation is on in the four new cases from Bharuch where a close-knit group of four has been tested positive. “We have sought help from the police department to get their travel history,” she said.
