AHMEDABAD: Maharashtra may have the highest number of 490 Covid-19 positive patients and 24 deaths as on Saturday afternoon in India – but Gujarat pips the neighbouring state with a high mortality rate of 9.5%, which is nearly double of the 4.9% corona death rate in Maharashtra.
On Saturday, Gujarat crossed 100 cases of Covid-19 positive cases with the tally climbing to 105. By evening, the state added three more cases, pushing the total to 108. The 10th life lost to coronavirus was that of a 67-year-old woman who succumbed to Covid complications on Saturday morning at SVP Hospital in Ahmedabad.
Based on the afternoon figures collated by ministry of health & family welfare, government of India, Gujarat had a mortality rate of 9.5% which was much higher than Maharashtra (4.9%), Telangana (4.4%), Delhi (1.3%) and Kerala (0.7%) the states which have higher positive cases than Gujarat. TOI has analysed data available till Saturday afternoon as comparative data of states till evening was not updated.
In terms of number of patients who succumbed to coronavirus, the state is second only to Maharashtra. Gujarat health department officials said that the figure seems bigger as the number of positive cases are lower than a few other Indian states.
Principal secretary, health and family welfare, Jayanti Ravi said that the mortality rate can be less if the patients seek medical help within 48 hours of first experiencing symptoms like high fever, breathlessness etc.
