Ahmedabad : A conventional approach to a plot development for a single dwelling could be a construction in the middle or one side of the plot. But what if the plan is ‘deconstructed’ and living room, bedroom, kitchen, etc. are separated with an open space in the middle?
“The plan worked as the family adopted to the open space as the primary living area which gave them more opportunities to connect,” said Jeeth Iype, the architect and co-founder of Good Earth, on Friday. He was speaking at the Comfort at the Extremes (CATE) conference at the CEPT University.
Iype in his talk said that the architectural approach in majority of his projects is to see the buildings as an extension of nature around it.
Thus, jutting balconies are often covered in foliage and several of the schemes have car-free environments with long-winding walking paths and interconnected community spaces.
As the three-day conference concluded on Friday, the experts elaborated on themes such as hybrid cooling options, resilient built environment, thermal comfort for building design and operation among others.
The organizers said that the issue of thermal comfort is a multi-dimensional one that includes human physiology, architecture, space design, cooling methods, construction materials, and understanding climate.
Several of the participants pointed at understanding traditions as a way to sustainable architecture. They said that different parts of the world developed different construction methods and diverse building materials.
The steel-and-glass building might not work in all conditions – and even if they do, they would require more energy for optimal thermal comfort, they added.
